Card-mounted I/O modules are used in double-sided grinding machines

Solution November 5, 2025

Double-sided grinding machines are used for grinding hard and brittle materials such as ceramics, semiconductor silicon wafers, and computer bracket parts with two parallel sides. A double-sided grinding machine is a grinding machine that grinds the surface of a workpiece using a grinding tool coated with or embedded with abrasive

Working principle

Double-sided grinding machines can avoid deformation problems caused by the bonding error of the fixture and the stress difference between the two sides of the sheet

The workpiece to be ground is placed inside the planetary gear set, with grinding discs on both the upper and lower surfaces. Grinding pads are fixed to the surfaces of the upper and lower grinding discs, and the wafer to be processed is placed within a differential gear train consisting of a central gear and an internal gear ring. Grinding pressure is applied to the upper grinding disc by a cylinder

To reduce the forces acting on the wafer during polishing, the upper and lower polishing discs are typically rotated at equal but opposite angular velocities. The wafer's motion is driven by planetary gears, and it also rotates under the polishing pressure of the upper and lower discs. Therefore, the wafer's motion is a composite motion of planetary motion and rotational motion

Solution

This case demonstrates precision pressure control achieved through a combination of PLC, I/O modules, PT, electro-proportional valves, and low-friction cylinders. The double-sided grinding machine uses a spindle to drive two grinding discs to rotate, creating contact with the workpiece surface. Friction grinding is then employed to process the workpiece surface material, improving its dimensions and surface quality

The upper platen of the grinder employs a mechanically locked anti-fall device to ensure the safety of loading and unloading wafers when the upper platen is raised. For grinders requiring monitoring of numerous and concentrated points, the AUEX card-mounted module, expandable via a backplane bus, is suitable

Application effect

High cost performance

The AUEX card-mounted module requires only two power supplies: one for the coupler and one for the system. Expansion modules do not require a power supply, further reducing wiring labor costs. During maintenance, the terminals are pluggable, eliminating the need for rewiring; the card-mounted design makes module removal and removal easier; and the coupler's built-in hardware DIP switches allow for direct adjustment of station numbers and other settings, reducing downtime

Saves cabinet space and is aesthetically pleasing

The coupler body is only 24mm thick, which saves cabinet space; the AUEX card-mounted module has a glossy shell and reduces the power wiring of the expansion module, making the cabinet more aesthetically pleasing
